Inside Slant: Sunday morning nuggets
By Kevin Seifert
Sunday's Week 2 games are fast approaching, and I don't want to flood your brain (or mine) with too much information. So let's just remember two nuggets as we prepare for the early games:
- As you might expect, the likelihood of playoff aspirations are relevant even after two games for teams that start 2-0 or 0-2. I posted the exact percentages Friday afternoon in this entry. Essentially, two-thirds of teams that start 2-0 make the playoffs. Fewer than 15 percent of 0-2 teams go on to do it.
- Week 1 provided us with a nearly unprecedented total of close games. Sunday's matchups make you wonder if Week 2 could be more of the same. Last week, 12 of the 16 games were decided by seven or fewer points -- tied for the most in any week in NFL history. For context, consider that about half -- 47 percent -- of the games last season were that close. (Hat tip to ESPN Stats & Information.)
Have a great Sunday. I'll be back with you this evening with Week 2's Studs and Duds.
