Locker Room Buzz: Carolina Panthers
By David Newton
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Observed in the locker room after the Carolina Panthers' 24-23 loss to the Buffalo Bills:
Wounded: Two of Carolina's starting defensive backs, free safety Charles Godfrey (Achilles) and strong safety Quintin Mikell (ankle), left the locker room on crutches and wearing a boot cast. Neither is sure about his future this season. "Stuff like this is kind of out of your control," Godfrey said.
Silent: Starting cornerback Captain Munnerlyn sat on his stool, staring blankly into space. "We had the game," he finally said. "No timeouts. Eighty yards. And they scored a touchdown. It's crazy."
Defensive: Wide receiver Steve Smith angrily interrupted when running back DeAngelo Williams was asked whether the Panthers should have gone for the first down instead of a field goal on fourth-and-1 with 1:48 remaining and Buffalo out of timeouts. "It was the right decision," he said. "I don't care what you think. You're sitting up there in the press box."
Defiant: Quarterback Cam Newton, after taking almost an hour to shower and dress, tried his best to live up to his captain role. "We've got a bunch of relentless guys on our team," he said. "As far as quitting, there will be none of that at all."
