Wrap-up: Saints 27, Bills 7

Posted by ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas

On a day when their offense was as quiet as I’ve seen it, the New Orleans Saints officially told the world they’re a good football team.

You can’t play fantasy football all the time and reality is so much better when you have a running game and a defense to go with Drew Brees and that passing offense. Or when the running game and the defense pick up the slack on a day when Brees isn’t shredding record books.

Did you see what the New Orleans defense did in the fourth quarter? The Saints kept making the Bills punt. They held Terrell Owens without a catch. They pressured the quarterback.

Did you catch Pierre Thomas’ 34-yard run? On a handoff? Or his 19-yard touchdown run as the Saints tried to run the clock out?

Stuff like that just hasn’t happened for the Saints the last two years and that’s wonderful news. What we found out Sunday is that the Saints have a real defense and a little bit of a running game to go with the best quarterback in the world.

Multiple strengths are the common denominator of good teams and the Saints now are in that club. They’re no longer one-dimensional. That’s why they’re 3-0, in first place in the NFC South and 2-0 on the road.

It’s a good thing the Saints have all those things going for them as they head home to host the undefeated New York Jets next week. The Saints can win a lot more games if they keep getting help from the defense and the running game.
