Locker Room Buzz: Atlanta Falcons
By Vaughn McClure
ATLANTA -- Observed in the locker room after the Atlanta Falcons' 31-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Georgia Dome on Sunday:
Smooth operator: Harry Douglas took a few extra minutes brushing the waves in his hair before he addressed the media in front of his locker on Sunday. Guess he wanted to look as pretty in front of the cameras as he did on the field with a career-high 149 receiving yards. He stepped up with Julio Jones and Roddy White out of the lineup. "Matt (Ryan) did a great job today. All our receivers did a great job today stepping up," Douglas said.
Taking responsibility: Rookie Robert Alford didn’t make any excuses for his fumbled punt in the second half that led to a Tampa Bay touchdown. "I caught it, tried to make a guy miss and then I had the ball a little too loose," Alford admitted. "I should have had it closer to my body. On my way down, a guy flew in and just punched it out. Everything was my fault. I went back to the sideline and told coach I’ve got to be more careful with the ball." Alford took over for Douglas at the primary punt returner and finished with just one return for no yards and a fair catch.
Shaking it off: Rookie first-round draft pick Desmond Trufant seemed fine in the locker room despite hobbling off the field with a late-game leg injury. He explained what happened. "I just got a little cramping in my calf,’’ he said. "That’s it." That’s good news for a Falcons' team decimated by injuries this season.
Roddy sighting: Receiver Roddy White, who missed the first game of his NFL career Sunday due to hamstring and ankle injuries, seemed to be in a pleasant mood as he got dressed at his locker with his two boys alongside him. One of the boys snuck away to listen to what Thomas DeCoud had to say about scoring his first-career touchdown on a fumble return. The Falcons will feel a lot better when White’s getting dressed for his next game.
