There’s a report out of Washington that former Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris dined with some members of the Redskins organization Wednesday night. Very interesting.

I kind of doubt this was just a social gathering. Washington is a very logical landing place for Morris. General manager Bruce Allen held that same position in Tampa Bay and Washington offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan was an assistant with Morris with the Bucs.

Morris’ stint in Tampa didn’t end well and it’s obvious he’s going to have to take a step back. But the report suggests the Redskins could be looking at Morris to coach their defensive backs. That sounds about right.

Morris failed as a head coach and defensive coordinator with the Bucs. But he was a very good defensive backs coach before that. Stepping back and coaching a secondary is probably the logical move for Morris right now. I still think he can be a good head coach in this league, but that will come down the road.

For now, Morris needs to get back to doing what he does best. He can coach a secondary for a year or two and eventually move up to a job as a defensive coordinator. Morris simply wasn’t mature enough to be a head coach when the Bucs hired him and he didn’t suddenly grow into the role. Stepping back a bit can only help Morris for the next time around.
