On the ground in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – I’m on the ground in the Queen City. As best as I can tell, it still looks as if Cam Newton will be crowned king of the Carolinas on Thursday night.

I’ve got calls into Panthers officials to see if they’re ready to tip their hand with what they’re going to do with the first pick in the NFL draft. But I’m expecting the Panthers to take this thing right down to the wire, just in case some team makes some sort of ridiculous offer to move up to No. 1.

I’ll let you know if I hear anything further or different. But I’d be shocked if the Panthers somehow reverse the course they’ve been on for the last month or so and don’t take Newton.

One thing I can tell you for sure is the contingent that will represent the Panthers at the draft is on the way to New York. Jackie Miles and crew were boarding a plane in another terminal as I was getting off a plane in another terminal at Charlotte Douglas Airport.
