SAN DIEGO -- Greetings from the town that calls itself America's Finest City. How am I to argue with that claim?

I arrived in San Diego near the end of the Chargers' first practice Saturday and I was able to catch up with some folks. Here are some observations and notes from the morning:

  • First-round pick Larry English was at the team' facility Saturday morning to sign his contract. He is expected to make his practice debut Saturday afternoon.

  • Cornerback Quentin Jammer had a nice interception late in practice.

  • Coach Norv Turner praised the play of backup running back Michel Bennett, who should make the team.

  • The Chargers practice late Saturday afternoon. The team has one practice Sunday, be the team's first practice in pads.

  • Turner reiterated that Jacques Cesaire is a starter at the spot.

  • Linebacker Shawne Merriman's mohawk needs some more blue dye. It's fading.
