Things to know from the first night

Shea Weber, please report to the principal's office: The hulking Predators defenseman might be looking at a detention from Principal Shanahan after giving pesky Henrik Zetterberg's face an introduction to the dasher late in the Red Wings-Preds first-round opener, which Nashville won 3-2. Weber's exuberance was clearly over the line, which is saying something in the slash-him-to-gangrene officiating standards of the playoffs. More to come on this one. Update: Weber was fined the maximum $2,500. No suspension.

The Igloo wasn't the only thing that imploded: After going up 3-0 in the first period, it looked like the Penguins were on easy street. Then complacency reared its ugly head, Ilya Bryzgalov shook off his early-season self for his latter-season self, and just like that the Flyers had stolen home-ice advantage with a 4-3 OT win. Oh, and Danny Briere was a foot offside before his goal that started the comeback. Now that's something you should know.

The Green Men had lots of company: The penalty box in Vancouver was uncharacteristically crowded for a playoff game. Byron Bitz's major and automatic game misconduct for boarding was costly for the Canucks, who acted like schoolkids waiting for a teacher to show up to class. As in, no discipline. The Kings said thank you very much, scoring on two of their EIGHT power plays en route to a two-goal win. The Canucks, meanwhile, had a relatively similar shot at redemption but went a stinkin' oh-fer-5 on the power play, a terrible stat in the penalty-lite playoffs. Expect Daniel Sedin to suddenly feel a lot better.
