All-Star voting: What fans are getting right, wrong

Like the NHL scoring race, Sidney Crosby is beginning to run away with the All-Star fan voting, as well. Updated ballots Tuesday showed the Penguins captain leading all NHL players with 319,809 votes, more than doubling his teammate Evgeni Malkin, who sits in fifth place among forwards.

Voting runs through Jan. 3 as fans will select the All-Star starters, while team captains will pick the rest of the teams for the All-Star Game in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 30.

Here is a look at how things are shaping up (* -- denotes write-in candidate; the NHL's results below reflect voting through Dec. 6):

Forwards

Claude Giroux, the pride of Hearst in Northern Ontario, leads all write-in candidates among forwards with 147,993 votes. Inexplicably, Sean Avery is the next highest in write-in votes among forwards, which just goes to show that, like the All-Star Game itself, the voting can sometimes be a total joke.

Defensemen

Goaltenders

Carey Price continues to lead all goalies despite not being on the original ballot, as the write-in candidate and early-season Vezina Trophy candidate has 209,025 votes. Tim Thomas should be right there with him, but is ranked fourth. Go figure. The fans saw fit to put Marc-Andre Fleury third in voting even though he took the first month of the season off before getting back his game. Ah, the joy of fan balloting!
