New rules: NHL releases video to teams

The NHL released a video to teams today outlining the new rule changes for the 2010-11 season. Highlights of the clip include:

• Illegal checks to the head (the controversial hits on Marc Savard and David Booth were used as examples);

• What constitutes a legal hit;

• Low hits and contact on icings;

• Rules of engagement; this one was interesting; highlighted fights off the playing surface, warm-up altercations (which can now include a $25,000 fine plus supplemental discipline) and any player who uses "obscene, profane or abusive language or gestures directed at any person runs risk of an unsportsmanlike penalty and supplemental discipline." (The clip showed Duncan Keith's water bottle episode as an example of the league's last point.)
