TORONTO -- New York Islanders tough guy Trevor Gillies has an in-person hearing with the NHL in Toronto on Friday, a source confirmed to ESPN.com.

Gillies was ejected from Wednesday night's game against Minnesota for a hit from behind on Wild winger Cal Clutterbuck. The hit came just a few shifts into his first game back after serving a nine-game suspension for his head hit on Pittsburgh’s Eric Tangradi last month.

The league requests an "in-person" hearing in order to be able to suspend a player longer than five games if it chooses to do so.

Gillies' hit was in response to Clutterbuck’s hard hit on Justin DiBenedetto, which drew a boarding penalty.

Gillies and Isles interim coach Jack Capuano told NHL.com that they did not think Clutterbuck's back was completely turned.

"It's up to the league to decide," Gillies told NHL.com about the possibility of a suspension.
