UNC opponent preview: Boston College

As we count down to the opening of the basketball season, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....

Opponent: Boston College

Date(s): Jan. 29 (at Chestnut Hill, Mass.)

Series results: UNC leads 9-5. (The Tar Heels beat BC 83-60 last season.)

Boston College last season: 9-22 (4-12 in the ACC)

Foe to know: Ryan Anderson, 6-8 forward, sophomore

The California product led the Eagles in points (11.2), rebounds (7.4) and minutes (29.9) last season, and was a unanimous pick for the ACC’s All-Freshman team. He was one of five freshmen who averaged double-figure minutes, and coach Steve Donahue will be looking for those now-sophomores to make huge strides this season.

BC finished 12th in the ACC in both scoring offense (59.1 ppg) and field goal percentage (40.8), so Donahue is hoping Anderson will have a more reliable outside shot. The power forward made only 23 of his 84 3-point attempts as a freshman.

Tidbits: Seven-footer Dennis Clifford (9.1 ppg, 4.7 rebounds per game) teams with Anderson in the frontcourt, and it will be interesting to watch his development, as well. … Along with their passel of sophomores, the Eagles will be heavily counting on freshmen guards Olivier Hanlan and Joe Rahon, as well.
