As we count down to the opening of the basketball season, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....
Opponent: Wake Forest
Date: Feb. 5 (in Chapel Hill, N.C.)
Series results: UNC leads 154-56 (the Tar Heels beat the Deacons in Winston-Salem last season).
Wake Forest last season: 13-18 overall, 4-8 in the ACC
Foe to Know: C.J. Harris, 6-foot-3 guard, senior
Harris called it “a big tease” -- getting to the NCAA tournament his freshman year, only to have to endure loss after loss over the past two seasons (of games and teammates).
He and junior guard Travis McKie are the only two players left from coach Jeff Bzdelik’s first team, meaning they’ll be counted on to lead a seven-player freshman class that will need to play beyond its experience if the Deacons want to improve upon last season’s win total.
"I know in the past, my freshman year, we had all seniors. They had been through everything," Harris told The Associated Press earlier this month. "They knew how to work hard. They knew what it took to win tough games and finish games. That's one of the things I've kept with me through the years [and] I can instill in the freshmen here -- how hard you have to play, day in and day out."
Harris has improved steadily since his rookie year; he made 42 percent of his 3-pointers in ACC play last season and he is his team’s leading returning scorer (16.7 ppg).
Tidbits: The Demon Deacons won two exhibition games in Canada over the weekend -- at Brock University and at Ryerson. ... With Tony Chennault's decision to transfer, another key player to watch will be Codi Miller-McIntyre, a 6-2 freshman who is expected to start at point guard.
