CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina sophomore P.J. Hairston will not play in his team’s game at No. 1 Indiana on Tuesday after spraining his left knee in practice on Sunday.

The Tar Heels’ third-leading scorer did not practice Monday, and the school announced he would not travel to Bloomington, Ind., on Monday night.

“We don’t think … it’s anything serious, long term,’’ UNC coach Roy Williams said during his radio show. “But he sprained his knee, didn’t feel like he could do anything in practice today. We’re coming so close to the end of the semester, if you can’t play, stay home and study.”

A team spokesman said earlier Monday that Hairston, who is averaging 10.8 points and 4.2 rebounds and is shooting 35.3 percent on 3-pointers off the bench, was diagnosed with mild left knee sprain.
