3:30 p.m. update: A team spokesman this afternoon said Davis' injury is a sprained left ankle, sustained sometime last week in practice.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams is hoping to have reserve wing Leslie McDonald -- who has missed two straight games because of a sore knee -- back for Saturday’s game against Maryland.

However, Luke Davis, the Tar Heels’ third string point guard, will be out because of an ankle injury.

“Luke is not going to be able to practice; I think they’re putting him in a boot this afternoon so he will not be able to practice," Williams said Monday during the ACC teleconference. “Leslie is seeing a doctor this afternoon before practice. ...I’m hoping we’ll have Leslie back, but we won’t have Luke.”

McDonald missed UNC’s loss to Miami last Thursday and did not travel for the Tar Heels’ win at Florida State on Saturday after he “tweaked” his right knee. It’s the same knee that forced him to redshirt last season, after he tore that MCL and ACL during the summer of 2011. He is is averaging 8.4 points and 17.9 minutes off the bench.

Davis, who has averaged 5.7 minutes in 11 games this season, did not dress for Saturday’s game because of the injured ankle, a team spokesman said.

Williams said having a week between games comes at a good time, because it gives some of his banged-up players a chance to heal.
