As we count down to the first day of basketball practice (Oct. 12), let’s take a daily look at the opponents on North Carolina’s basketball schedule….

Opponent: Florida Atlantic

Date: Nov. 11, tip-off 2:30 p.m.

Location: Smith Center, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Series: UNC leads series 1-0; the Tar Heels won 105-52 on December 19, 2006.

Last season: The Owls finished 11-19 overall; 7-9 in the Sun Belt

Foe to know: Greg Gantt, 6-feet-2 G, Senior

Gantt has led his team in scoring each of his first three seasons -- and he's worked on developing his game throughout his career. Almost strictly an outside shooter when he arrived on campus, the Gainesville, Fla., native has improved at scoring off the dribble, and pushed himself to post up more at the end of last season. As a result, he enters the season needing only 265 points to set Florida Atlantic’s all-time scoring record (he currently has 1,295 points).

Tidbits: This serves as one of the opening on-campus games of the Maui Invitational; the Tar Heels are one of the eight teams that will continue on to Hawaii, while FAU is one of four teams that will go on to play “regional games” at Elon. … The Owls’ prospects this season might depend on a bevy of newcomers; they boast six freshmen and one transfer. … Head coach Mike Jarvis -- who has previously led Boston University, George Washington and St. John’s to the NCAA tournament -- is now in his fifth year at FAU.
