As we count down to the first day of basketball practice (Oct. 12), let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s basketball schedule ...
Opponent: East Tennessee State
Date: Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Smith Center, Chapel Hill
Series results: UNC leads 5-0; last game was in Feb. 1987, when the Tar Heels won 118-65 at the Smith Center
ETSU last season: The Buccaneers finished 17-14, 10-8 in the Atlantic Sun
Foe to know: Marcus Dubose, 6-2 guard, senior
Dubose wasn’t thinking about college basketball when, in 2009, a former college player saw him playing pick-up and made a few calls. A few months later, the South Carolina native found himself at Mendocino Community College in Ukiah, Calif. Last year, the junior college transfer averaged 16.4 points over ETSU’s final five games, and will be the Bucs’ leading returning scorer this fall (10.8 ppg). He led the team with 37 made 3-pointers, but can also score on drives to the basket.
“Marcus is a really even-keel kid both on and off the floor, with a great demeanor and attitude,’’ coach Murry Bartow says in the player’s media guide evaluation. “On the floor, he’s a very efficient, high-percentage shooter who can make 3s, drive to the basket, and shoot free throws well. He’s also an unusually good rebounder on both ends of the floor.”
