As we count down to Late Night With Roy Williams (Oct. 12) and the beginning of basketball practice, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....
Opponent: Texas
Date: Dec. 19, 9 p.m.
Location: Austin, Texas
Series results: Longhorns lead 4-3 (last game was last December, when UNC won 82-63 at home)
Texas last season: 20-14 overall, 9-9 in the Big 12. Lost to Cincinnati in the NCAA tournament
Foe to know: Myck Kabongo, 6-1 guard, sophomore
The speedy Canadian had some ups and downs as a freshman, with a notable “down” being a one-point, 15-minute outing at UNC. But the point guard steadily improved, averaging 9.6 points and 5.2 assists last season, helping his team to an NCAA tournament bid.
Kabongo announced in late March that he would return to college for his sophomore season, and he will be looking to lead a young team that boasts some experienced sophomores, plus ESPN Recruiting Nation’s fourth-ranked recruiting class.
Tidbits: This could actually mark the second time the Longhorns and Tar Heels match up in less than a month. The teams are on opposite sides of the bracket in the Maui Invitational, and could meet in the championship game on Nov. 21.
