As we count down to Late Night With Roy Williams (Oct. 12) and the beginning of basketball practice, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....
Opponent: Florida State
Date(s): Jan. 12 (in Tallahassee, Fla.) and March 3 (in Chapel Hill, N.C.)
Series results: UNC leads 40-12 (FSU won twice last season, including in the ACC tournament title game)
Florida State last season: 25-10, 12-4 in the ACC. Won the ACC tournament title; lost to Cincinnati in the NCAA Round of 32
Foe to know: Michael Snaer, 6-5 guard, senior
The Seminoles lost six players from last year’s rotation, but the return ACC Player of the Year favorite Snaer is a key reason not to overlook the Seminoles this season. He averaged 14 ppg, buried game-winning 3-pointers at Duke and vs. Virginia Tech, and is confidently looking to build on all of that.
“I’ve been believing in myself and now, I’m at a point now, I feel like if I’m not the best, I’m one of the best 2-guards in the country,” Snaer told ESPN.com’s Myron Medcalf in August. “I strongly feel that way. I’ve been up against all the guys at [LeBron’s camp], where you see all the guys at your position. I really feel that, in my mind, if I’m not the best, I’m one of the best. I can’t be guarded.”
He averaged 17.5 points in two wins over the Tar Heels last season.
Tidbits: It will be interesting to see how the Tar Heels react to returning to Tallahassee in January. Last season, UNC got so thoroughly dominated there (90-57, in the most lopsided loss of the Roy Williams era) that Williams led most of the team off the court early, leaving a group of walk-ons and reserves to play the final 14 seconds before Seminoles fans stormed the court.
