UNC opponent preview: Georgia Tech

As we count down to Late Night With Roy Williams (Oct. 12) and the beginning of basketball practice, let’s take a look at an opponent on North Carolina’s schedule ....

Opponent: Georgia Tech

Date(s): Jan. 23 (in Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Feb. 19 (in Atlanta)

Series results: UNC leads 60-23. (The Tar Heels won in the teams’ only meeting last season.)

Georgia Tech last season: 11-20, 4-12 in the ACC

Foe to know: Mfon Udofia, 6-2 guard, senior

Coach Brian Gregory was impressed with the progress Udofia made in his first season as a full-time point guard, and he wants that progression to continue. Not only will generating offense be important (Udofia is the leading returning scorer at 9.9 ppg, on a squad that finished next-to-last in the ACC in scoring offense), so will cutting down on turnovers and showing leadership. He is one of only two seniors on a team that continues to try to rebuild.

Tidbits: UNC coach Roy Williams doesn’t have a lot of great memories of Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum, as his team has lost three of the four times it has played there since he’s been the Tar Heels’ head coach (and the lone win, by the way, was by a point). So it will be interesting to see if anything changes now that the arena has been rebuilt into McCamish Pavilion. After playing a nomadic home schedule last season, the Yellow Jackets’ new home opens this fall.
