UNC numbers to know
By Robbi Pickeral
As North Carolina prepares to play at top-ranked Indiana on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, here are some interesting digits, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information:
12 – Number of times UNC has beaten a team ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. That’s more than any other school. The breakdown of the top-ranked squads the Tar Heels have defeated:
Duke -- 7
Connecticut -- 1
Illinois -- 1
NC State -- 1
Oklahoma -- 1
Syracuse -- 1
5-7 – The Tar Heels’ all-time record against the Hoosiers. UNC has a losing mark against only four teams that it has faced at least 10 times. The other three: Navy (6-14), George Washington (4-6) and NYU (7-10).
7 – UNC is attempting seven more 3-pointers per game this season after losing last year’s front line of 6-foot-8 Harrison Barnes, 7-0 Tyler Zeller and 6-11 John Henson to the NBA draft. Three-pointers are accounting for 30 percent of the Tar Heels’ points, up from 19 percent last season.
10.7 – Sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo’s average scoring increase from last season.
