Brian Kelly will be the speaker for Assumption College's 95th commencement exercise May 12, the school announced Thursday.
Kelly, a 1983 graduate of Assumption, will also receive an honorary degree.
"I am a proud graduate of Assumption College. I greatly value the education I received there as well as what the College taught me about commitment to service," Kelly said in a release. "I am delighted to return to my alma mater to address the graduating class of 2012.”
The Notre Dame coach and Massachusetts native played linebacker for Assumption's club team for four years, captaining the 1981 and '82 squads, which finished 8-3 and 7-1-1, respectively. He graduated from the Worcester, Mass., school with a degree in political science before taking a job as the team's linebackers coach and defensive coordinator from 1983-86. He also coached the softball team during that time.
“Brian has remained closely connected with Assumption and has proudly articulated how his Catholic liberal arts education and the strong sense of community at Assumption have served as a great foundation for his successful career,” Assumption College president Francesco Cesareo said in a release. “He is passionate about how Assumption College uniquely combines both intellectual and spiritual development that supports and encourages each student, and I expect that our graduating seniors and audience members will find inspiration from his life story and experiences.”
