Colleague Jared Shanker has a story on Notre Dame commit James Onwualu (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) that Irish fans will love.
Onwualu doesn't lift weights and was one of the worst testers on the bench press at the Under Armour junior combine, but he outdid the competition in several other drills. He trains "hard as hell" with Ted Johnson, doing technique-based workouts and improving his posterior chain to avoid injury.
"The crazy thing is if you go to YouTube, you can see guys jumping out of the pool all day long," Johnson said. "Just the other day, James jumped out. But they're all adults jumping out of maybe three feet of water. I can send a video of James at 16 years of age exploding out of water 60 times, and just the other day he did it 80 times.
"So now we've moved to four feet, and I've scoured the Internet and there's nobody exploding out of a pool out of four feet of water."
Onwualu takes no supplements but is on a strict diet. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound receiver has been training since he was 13 with Johnson, who also works with Irish record-breaking receiver Michael Floyd, a former Cretin-Derhman star. Onwualu and Floyd have developed a friendship through their similar paths.
