NFL not on Brian Kelly's mind

By Matt Fortuna

MIAMI -- Brian Kelly is unsure of his future -- his distant, distant future.

The third-year Notre Dame coach has the Irish on the brink of their first national title in 24 years, and Monday's Discover BCS National Championship against Alabama is the only thing he has on his mind as the rumor mill churns on about the NFL's seven vacant head-coaching positions.

"For me to say I'll never coach in the NFL, I have no idea," Kelly said at Sun Life Stadium. "I'm not trying to be evasive. It's the truth of the matter. It's all about timing."

The first question asked to Kelly during title-game media day was if any pro teams had contacted him.

"Any of those things that occur relative to contact, there's a strict protocol for that," Kelly said. "They have to contact my representation and then they've got to follow through that. If that did occur, then all that stuff is secondary to this football game. My focus -- this is the biggest game that I've ever been involved in, so my focus is 100 percent on this football game. All that other stuff, that happens when you're winning football games.

"I've been through this a lot in my career. It's flattering if there is interest, which I don't know that there is, but again, that is such a secondary topic for me right now, it's all about this game."

Standing two days from potential immortality in South Bend, Ind., Kelly is in no rush to go anywhere.

"I think from my perspective I've got the best job in the country -- NFL, college, high school, whatever," he said. "I just look at the place that I'm at and thankful for the opportunity that I have."
