Tuitt recovering from sports hernia

By Matt Fortuna

Stephon Tuitt was the biggest name to sit out of Notre Dame's opening spring practice Wednesday, as the ESPN.com All-American was recovering from a procedure to repair a sports hernia that had bothered him late last season.

The rising junior is expected back in roughly two weeks, which would make him available for the second half of spring ball.

"He’s already moving really well," coach Brian Kelly said. "He feels so much better. He had some restriction in that groin-hip flexor area where he was really restricted and really running out. So we said, ‘You know what? Let’s get it done. Let’s not wait on it.’ It’s something we may have managed, but we want to get him 100 percent.”

Early-enrollee offensive tackle Steve Elmer (stomach bug) missed his first-ever spring practice, while nose guard Kona Schwenke had some make-up work to do after a late spring break flight back from Hawaii that forced him to miss class Monday.

The Irish return to the practice field Friday, with players and assistant coaches being made available for the first time this spring later that afternoon.
