ALAMEDA, Calif. -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan held a conference call to discuss Sunday’s season opener with the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday morning.

Here are some highlights:

Ryan, a defensive aficionado, loved what he saw on film of linebacker Khalil Mack. Ryan said the Buffalo product has everything: He can pass-rush, he can cover and he has a passion for the game. But Ryan didn’t allow himself to daydream too long. The Jets had the No. 18 pick in the draft.

“We’re never going to see this kid,” Ryan recalls saying when he watched film of Mack. He was right. The Raiders nabbed him at No. 5.

Ryan said the Jets are not taking Derek Carr for granted because he is a rookie. Ryan likes Carr’s arm strength, mobility and quickness. “He looks good,” Ryan said of Carr.

Ryan, whose team beat the Raiders last year, said the biggest difference in Oakland is the established names Oakland has brought in, especially on defense. “It’s a who’s who,” Ryan said.
