ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Part of the Oakland Raiders' plan to start Matt Schaub at quarterback was to allow the veteran some freedom at the line of scrimmage to make adjustments.

Now that the Raiders are going with rookie Derek Carr as the starter, the responsibility may move to center Stefen Wisniewski.

"There are times when [Carr] may defer to Wiz. He and Wiz have spent a lot of time here, really since the last week when he started practicing before the Seattle game. They spend a ton of time together and they'll continue to spend time," Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. "Wiz has every, and we have, all the confidence in the world in Derek, but we say, 'Hey, Wiz, if there's something that he misses, we need to override it. You've got the go-ahead right now at this point to override it.'"

Wisniewski should easily handle the job. The fourth-year player has an earned a reputation around the league for his savvy.

In other Oakland notes:

Backup tight end David Ausberry continues to look good and should be ready to play Sunday after missing the past three weeks of practice.

As expected, Oakland coach Dennis Allen said TJ Carrie will be the punt returner and Latavius Murray will be the kick returner. Both showed some flashes in the preseason.

Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver said all five linebackers will play often.
