Berkeley says: Whew!

The punchline this Saturday? It's not California.

That's because the Bears came back from a first-half deficit and beat Washington State 20-13, which increased the Cougars Pac-10 losing streak to 16 games.

Cal fans, you can see it one of two ways. The pessimist? We almost lost to the Cougs! We're terrible!

Or you can see it like I do: The Bears showed some pride and did what it took to win in the second half.

Start with this: quarterback Brock Mansion is going to be a work-in-progress after replacing Kevin Riley. He completed 12 of 24 for 171 yards with two interceptions and no TDs.

But the defense stepped up, holding the Cougars to just 194 yards -- well off their 331 yards per-game average -- and the running game stepped up with 212 yards, including 112 yards and two touchdowns from Shane Vereen.

Cal plays host to No. 1 Oregon on Saturday.

It will be a big underdog, but the Bears have been a much different team at home this year. So there's just a little bit of a "maybe" there.
