California coach Jeff Tedford was in a good mood on signing day. Why? Because he signed the best class of defensive linemen in the Pac-12.
"This is the best class of defensive linemen, from top-to-bottom, that we've ever assembled," he said.
But that's not the only reason. He's reassembling his coaching staff, and it might remind folks of the glory days when Cal was fighting with USC for the top spot in the Pac-10.
Receivers coach and passing game coordinator Eric Kiesau is back. As is offensive line coach Jim Michalczik, who hasn't been formally announced but Tedford said "is here, that's not any secret." Tedford said that he and those guys and running backs coach Ron Gould will hash things out -- there's one more hiring expected this week -- and figure out how responsibilities will be distributed.
"There's so much familiarity between coach Gould, Keisau and Michalczik, it's like reassembling the band," Tedford said. "We are all back together. There are no hidden agendas. Everybody understands what's going on."
Asked if he planned to call plays next fall, Tedford said "Possibly." He added,"I'm going to be more involved with the quarterbacks this year."
