Many of you have wanted to know how things would pencil out if I averaged the Pac-10 position rankings I've been doing over the past week or so.

First, a couple of notes.
  • Every school ranked No. 8, 9 or 10 in at least one position
  • Only Stanford and Washington State didn't rank No. 1 or No. 2 at a position.
  • It was feast or famine for UCLA, which ranked No. 1 or No. 2 at tight end, kicker, linebacker and defensive tackle and No. 9 or 10 at quarterback and offensive line. Those latter two -- critical positions -- should give pause to those writing too much into where the Bruins finished.
  • Obviously my belief that Arizona is underrated translated to the position rankings.
  • Washington State ranked No. 9 or 10 in eight of 12 categories, but ranked No. 4 at kicker and punter, which nearly pulled the Cougars out of the cellar.
  • Washington also ranked No. 9 or 10 in eight of 12 categories, but a No. 2 ranking at quarterback should provide hope -- no pressure, Jake Locker.
  • Keep in mind that much happened during the course of making these rankings: USC cornerback Shareece Wright became academically ineligible; Arizona tight end Rob Gronkowski will miss the opener due to a nagging back injury; USC receiver Ronald Johnson broke his collarbone; California tapped a kicker No. 1 whom I'd never heard of until today, etc.
  • The fact that kicker and punter are worth as much as quarterback and offensive line should help you look at these rankings for amusement purpose only -- right Oregon State fans?

School.... Average rank
  1. USC... 3.33
  2. California... 3.75
  3. Arizona... 4.08
  4. UCLA... 4.67
  5. Oregon... 4.83
  6. Oregon State... 5.08
  7. Arizona State... 6.08
  8. Stanford... 6.50
  9. Washington... 8.25
  10. Washington State... 8.42
