I jJust got back to the hotel from the Coliseum. I missed a bunch, but I saw Husky Stadium go nuts when Washington took a 7-0 lead over LSU.
Let's take a gander at what has happened and is happening.
Stanford 39, Washington State 13
A decent debut for Stanford's redshirt freshman quarterback Andrew Luck starting for the first time on the road. He didn't throw any picks, but completing less than 50 percent of his passes isn't much different than the sometimes off-target Tavita Pritchard in 2008. Of course, Toby Gerhart got his 121 yards and two touchdowns. The numbers suggest to me that there are good things here for the Cougars, starting with quarterback Kevin Lopina completing 10 of 15 for 122 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Last year, you may recall Lopina threw 11 picks with no touchdowns. He now many have the edge in his on-going quarterback competition with Marshall Lobbestael.
UCLA 33, San Diego State 14
The Bruins started slowly -- they trailed 14-3 early -- but rolled thereafter. While it's not good that redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince threw two interceptions and fumbled, the best news is one of the worst rushing attacks from 2008 had a respectable 145 yards on the ground. The defense, after a slow start, dominated, holding the Aztecs to only four first downs and 116 yards in total offense in the final three quarters.
LSU-Washington
Obviously, the pick-six that gave LSU a 10-7 lead over the Huskies was a downer, but thus far Washington is moving the ball fairly well. The Huskies even had a nice defensive stand near the goal line. The question is can the Huskies maintain their edge for four quarters? LSU is obviously going to have more depth to use as the game wears on. That Huskies fumble on the goal line by Chris Polk is a killer -- second critical turnover.
Maryland-California
I'm annoyed that Jahvid Best decided to run 73 yards for a touchdown when I wasn't looking. The Bears lead 24-6, but my guess is Cal fans are most happy to see quarterback Kevin Riley seemingly finding his rhythm with a touchdown pass. He's now 8 for 15 for 121 yards with a touchdown pass off a tough-guy scramble.
Arizona-Central Michigan
Matt Scott gets the start at quarterback and the Wildcats lead 3-0 early. No Rob Gronkowski, though, who is in street clothes due to his back injury.
Arizona State-Idaho State
The Sun Devils are dominating, as they should.
