Arizona State flops against Arizona

Arizona State's season and even its Pac-12 South Division hopes aren't over, but perhaps they should be.

The Sun Devils fell short in the Territorial Cup against Arizona 31-27, giving up a 23-yard TD pass from the Wildcats backup quarterback -- Bryson Beirne -- for the go-ahead points and then failing to punch in the winning score after reaching the Arizona 15-yard line in the waning moments.

The Sun Devils, once an impressive 5-1 and nationally ranked, have now lost three consecutive games -- to UCLA, Washington State and Arizona. Hardly a murders' row.

Of course, if Arizona State beats California at home next weekend -- and Cal is bad on the road -- and Utah beats Colorado and UCLA loses to USC, then the Sun Devils are still the Pac-12 South Division champion.

Which is kind of yucky, considering that coach Dennis Erickson is unlikely to survive after his team dropped four of five to a highly forgiving schedule.

Arizona had nothing to play for -- other than pride -- yet it rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to win in Sun Devil Stadium.

The Sun Devils had plenty to play for. But perhaps that pride element wasn't enough of a factor?
