A freak foot injury appears to have ended Oregon State quarterback Lyle Moevao's senior season.

Moevao likely tore ligaments in his right foot when a defensive lineman fell on him during a drill on Tuesday.

Moevao, the Beavers' starter last season, has played only one play in 2009. He had offseason shoulder surgery -- rotator cuff -- and was slow to recover while Sean Canfield asserted himself as No. 1 on the depth chart.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Katz becomes Canfield's backup -- starting with UCLA's visit on Saturday -- while Peter Lalich, a transfer from Virginia, falls in at No. 3.

Coach Mike Riley told reporters that the school would pursue a medical hardship year, but that the chances of the NCAA granting one are remote.
"It's really, really hard,'' Riley told The Oregonian. "It's almost one of those hard-to-believe things ... he's worked so hard to be almost ready to go, to step onto the field at some point, and I don't think he's going to be able to play again.''
