USC's Byers, Cal's Mack finalists for student-athlete honor

USC offensive guard Jeff Byers and California center Alex Mack were among 10 members of the inaugural class of finalists for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, an honor that combines on-field and off-field achievements for NCAA Division I football seniors in the Bowl Subdivision.
According to the press release, "[CLASS is] an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages those leaders to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact on their circle of influence."
Other football finalists are: tight end Travis Beckum (Wisconsin), quarterback Chase Clement (Rice), linebacker Maurice Crum, Jr. (Notre Dame), quarterback Chase Daniel (Missouri), linebacker James Laurinaitis (Ohio State), defensive tackle Darryl Richard (Georgia Tech), punter/kicker Louie Sakoda (Utah), and kicker Austin Starr (Indiana).
