Final word on USC-UCLA-Norton controversy

USC coach Pete Carroll didn't seem too bothered by the Ken Norton controversy, in which the Trojans assistant coach claimed that UCLA was using his name in recruiting, claiming the former UCLA linebacker would replace DeWayne Walker as defensive coordinator if he left for New Mexico State.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel denied the accusation in a statement.

Carroll said it's just a case of a rivalry heating up.

"Everybody want to see a rivalry, well, when you're this close, stuff is going to come up now and then," Carroll said. "This is competing and all that. This is over, but I bet there will be more stuff."
