The consensus among UCLA beat reporters: True freshman Richard Brehaut -- not senior Kevin Craft -- will replace injured starting quarterback Kevin Prince on Saturday against Kansas State.
Coach Rick Neuheisel and offensive coordinator Norm Chow were expected to discuss the situation Monday night and come up with a guy to run the No. 1 offense during today's practice.
Craft started all 12 games last year but threw a school record 20 interceptions. Nonetheless, a number of times, he shook off mistakes and led the Bruins to victory, most notably against Tennessee and Stanford.
It helps that Brehaut graduated from high school early and participated in spring practices. His knowledge of the offense therefore exceeds most true freshmen. He also got a handful of snaps against San Diego State.
And if nerves get to him, then Chow and Neuheisel have an experienced guy who can come off the bench.
Another positive: UCLA has a bye week after the Kansas State game. Prince is expected to be out three to four weeks, so he could -- conceivably -- be ready for the Oct. 3 Pac-10 opener at Stanford, though a more realistic return date is Oct. 10 at home vs. Oregon.
