Stanford's 21-14 win over USC created a nearly equal and opposite reaction in the AP poll.
USC tumbled 11 spots from No. 2 to No. 13. And Stanford jumped 12 notches from 21st to No. 9.
Oregon moved up to No. 3, meaning reporters believe the Ducks to be the best team to take on the SEC champion for the national title, at least at this point.
Alabama was No. 1 with 58 votes. LSU, at No. 2, got the other two. Those two SEC West teams meet on Nov. 3.
The Pac-12 continued to have five ranked teams, and Oregon State was tops among other teams getting votes, the equivalent of ranking 26th.
UCLA, which plays host to Oregon State on Saturday, is 18th. Arizona, which visits Oregon, is 22nd.
And Utah got a single vote.
