Running back Ka'Deem Carey, fresh off his record-breaking performance last week against Colorado, turned in another huge game, carrying 26 times for 204 yards and a score. It was part of a 320-yard rushing day for the Wildcats.
Matt Scott, making his return after missing time with a concussion, completed 12 of 27 passes for 160 yards with a touchdown.
Utah’s Travis Wilson, who completed just eight passes for 55 yards in a loss to Washington, bounced back to actually have a strong game, tossing for 311 yards while completing 28 of 40 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The turning point came early in the fourth quarter. With the score locked at 24-24, the Utes opted for a fake punt. But Arizona’s Marquis Flowers sniffed it out and the Utes turned it over in their territory on downs. That jump-started 10 straight points for the Wildcats.
With the loss, Utah is officially eliminated from postseason contention, ending the Utes streak of consecutive bowl appearances at nine.
Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, whose team improves to 7-4 (4-4) is the first coach in Arizona history to take the Wildcats to a bowl game in his debut season.
