How far has Oregon State come?

In 1997, Oregon State didn't win a Pac-10 game. That was Mike Riley's first season.

In 1998, the Beavers suffered their 28th consecutive losing season.

Think about that one for a moment.

Twenty-eight consecutive losing seasons!

Ah, but 1998 ended with a 44-41 overtime victory over Oregon in the Civil War and something clicked.

Two seasons later, under Dennis Erickson, the Beavers went 11-1 and finished ranked fourth in the country.

Now the Beavers are headed to a fourth consecutive bowl game -- whether that's their first Rose Bowl since 1965 or not -- and they clearly are one of the Pac-10's elite teams.

All this is a lead-in to a nice story here from Paul Buker considering the Oregon State journey and about how Riley learned that "if you’re happy, stay happy" after briefly leaving for the NFL.
