Craft will be the guy for UCLA

Ben Olson isn't going to ride in and save the day for UCLA at quarterback, though riding would be a better idea than running considering his injury history.

While Olson, who's made 10 starts over the previous two seasons when healthy, was back in uniform and saw some live action with the scout team this week, he won't play Saturday against Oregon State and still might not be ready to play in a game for a while.

"I'm not sure he's ready for game action," coach Rick Neuheisel said. "We'll have to wait and see. I'm well-aware that he'd love to have an opportunity to come in and play, but to me being healthy and then being ready to play at game speed are two different things. It will take a while before he can get into that situation."

There was some speculation that Neuheisel might look at other options at quarterback during the bye week after Kevin Craft struggled in the loss to California, throwing four interceptions for the second time this year.

But Neuheisel said the opposite happened.

"I think it solidified how we feel about the quarterback position," Neuheisel said. "We're probably not going to make a change. It's going to be what it's been and hopefully an improved version of what it's been."

He was speaking of Craft, of course, who Neuheisel has been caught on camera berating a number of times during games.

Neuheisel said that even though Craft has made his share of mistakes, he's not the only one to blame for the offensive struggles.

"It isn't as though he's defending the unfortunate throws that he makes," Neuheisel said. "We all take responsibility in terms of how our offense plays, not just focusing on the quarterback."

And it's hard to focus exclusively on the quarterback when the offensive line is even more beleaguered. The Bruins are running out of bodies due to injuries and suspensions.

Considering Oregon State's aggressive defensive scheme, Craft may be on the run much of the afternoon.
