Thomas outplays Costa in final Oregon scrimmage
By ESPN.com staff
Thomas outplayed senior Nate Costa
statistically in the Ducks closed scrimmage Thursday afternoon, according to a Tweet
from Rob Moseley of the Eugene Register-Guard.
Thomas completed 14 of 23 passes for 125 yards with three touchdowns, while Costa completed 17-of-35 for 138 yards with a TD and an interception.
Neither made much of an impact rushing: Costa gained 23 yards on 10 carries; Thomas 9 on four.
While the popular perception in this too-close-to-call competition is a tie goes to Costa as a senior, it's also possible that coach Chip Kelly might view a late surge from Thomas as a positive trend worth riding into the season.
On the other hand, Kelly might already have made up his mind and might believe Costa's maturity and body of work in spring and preseason practices earn him the nod.
What happened today is Costa didn't go out and make a strong statement, while Thomas did. Though it's also possible these numbers are deceiving.
So we all probably should wait for Kelly to make his decision on Saturday.
