Freshman linebacker Vontaze Burfict, the highest rated recruit in Arizona State history, has been rule academically eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse, the school announced Friday afternoon.
Burfict, ranked the nation's 16th-best overall prospect in 2009 on the ESPNU 150, will play Saturday in the Sun Devils season-opener against Idaho State.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Burfict, who starred at powerhouse Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., has been impressive in preseason camp and is expected to see significant action and even push for a starting job. He is presently listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind senior Gerald Munns.
