TEMPE, Ariz. -- From the Sun Devil Stadium press box:
An Arizona State TD to open the fourth will make things real hard on the Cardinal.
Carpenter just completed his 10th pass in a row to the Stanford 15.
Pass interference in the end zone on freshman CB Michael Thomas gives the Sun Devils a first-and-goal on the 1.
Carpenter hits TE Dan Knapp for the TD, his third TD pass. Drive was 14 plays, 75 yards and killed 7:19 off the clock.
Yes, that's a pretty impressive response.
It's 34-17 with 10:43 left.
Carpenter is now 27 for 34 for 344 yards. That's a 79.4 completion rate.
Keep typing about Carpenter... but the Sun Devils defense has done a pretty nice job, too.
(As I typed... Troy Nolan intercepts Pritchard).
Cardinal just passed 200 total yards before the Nolan pick.
Keegan Herring TD -- tosses ball in the air BUT NO PENALTY. Thought it was required to make that call? This game is on ice -- 41-17 with 7:15 left. Another second-half surge from the Sun Devils.
Alex Loukas enters for Stanford at QB.
Another ASU interception. Stanford WR Richard Sherman hurt on the play.
Danny Sullivan enters at QB for ASU.
Final count: Arizona State 41, Stanford 17.
Carpenter's final numbers: 27 of 36 for 345 yards with three TDs and one INT.
Carpenter's 733 yards passing in the first two games of the season is the most in school history.
Even better: He was only sacked twice by an aggressively blitzing Cardinal defense that is fairly strong up front.
Still, watching Carpenter often running for his life -- and making big plays while doing so -- doesn't bode well for when he plays a fast defense, such as Georgia on Sept. 20. Or USC or Oregon.
The protection is improving. It needs to improve more if the Sun Devils want to have a special season.
