Tostitos Fiesta Bowl predictions
By Kevin Gemmell and Ted Miller
One Pac-12 game left this season. The conference is 3-4 with a chance to break even in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Ted and Kevin both hit on Stanford. Ted (69-28) still holds a one-game edge over Kevin (68-29) with one left to play.
Ted Miller: Before the bowl season, it was easy to look at this as a solid win for Oregon. The Ducks just look better on paper. And they certainly look flashier on the big screen. But the Big 12's two wins over the Pac-12 this bowl season have made Kansas State's conference championship look more impressive. Still, the Ducks have a speed advantage and this is their fourth consecutive BCS bowl game, which means they have a big stage advantage, too. The NFL talk around coach Chip Kelly could be a distraction, but I don't think so. I also think the Ducks are healthier than they've been in a long time, which will be big, particularly on the defensive line. Oregon 33, Kansas State 24.
Kevin Gemmell: Well, it looks like Ted is going to wrap up the season prediction title, because I too am picking Oregon. I won't sacrifice principles by picking against my gut just for the hope of making up ground and forcing a tie (then we'd have to go into overtime -- which in the blogosphere is a grueling, non-stop, 24-hour battle of rock, paper, scissors). I'm on board with everything Ted offered up -- health being one of the biggest keys. Yes, Oregon has experience, but this is also a big stage for Marcus Mariota. Yet he's been fantastic in virtually every pressure situation this season. Only Kelly knows if he's gone after this game, and I imagine if he is, he wants to go out with a bang. The only place Ted and I differ is I see more points. Oregon 49, Kansas State 38.
