Quick look at the Pac-12 championship

By Ted Miller

Here's a quick look at the Pac-12 title game.

No. 7 Stanford (10-2, 7-2) at No. 11 Arizona State (10-2, 8-1), 7:45 ET, ESPN: Arizona State leads the series 16-12, but Stanford won their matchup on Sept. 21 42-28, a game the Cardinal led 39-7 entering the fourth quarter. However, the Sun Devils are 7-0 at home this year with a 28-point average margin of victory. Arizona State is No. 2 in the Pac-12 in scoring offense with 43.2 points per game. Stanford is No. 1 in scoring defense, allowing 19.0 points per game. The Sun Devils rank second in the conference in sacks, with 36 this year. Stanford has allowed the fewest sacks in the conference (11). The Cardinal leads the conference in third down conversion percentage (52.3 percent) and third down defense (32.6).

Good news: There don't figure to be too many penalties in this game. Arizona State is the Pac-12's least penalized team (28.5 yards per game) and Stanford ranks fourth (41.2 ypg). Turnover numbers are interesting. Arizona State is plus-13 on turnovers, which ranks No. 1 in the conference. Stanford only broke even, which ranks eighth. Both teams have 17 giveaways, but Arizona State has forced 30 turnovers, three more than any team in the conference. Arizona State will be without RB Marion Grice, who leads the conference in scoring with 10.9 ppg. He was replaced by D.J. Foster in the Sun Devils’ win over Arizona, and he rushed for 124 yards on 23 carries, scoring two touchdowns.
