USC says: Go Diego, go!

It appears Lane Kiffin isn't afraid to try new things, and that in itself is a new thing for the USC offense, which looked a bit stale last fall under coordinator Jeremy Bates.

Consider this: USC's new "Diego" offense with fancypants true freshman running back Dillon Baxter playing as a "Wildcat" quarterback. Baxter has quickly earned the ominous -- and burdensome -- title of "the next Reggie Bush."

Go Diego go! Or as my 16-month-old says, "Fo deego!" (He then calls me a lummox, takes a sip of his espresso and returns to the NY Times Book Review).

If you watch this run -- its 46 seconds into the highlight video -- you might understand why Kiffin is eager to find ways to get the ball into Baxter's hands.

Kiffin also has moved 250-pound defensive end James Boyd to quarterback.

Boyd is not just a bag of meat. As Michael Lev points out, as a senior at Jordan High of Los Angeles, he led the state with 4,266 passing yards and 44 touchdowns. He won't beat out Matt Barkley, but he adds depth to a thin position and might offer an interesting change of pace of the Trojans decide they need a bruiser to line up at QB -- say as a short-yardage "Diego."
