The Philadelphia Eagles weren’t expected to select a tight end in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.

When Stanford’s Zach Ertz was on the board, the Eagles couldn’t resist. And the move paid off.

Ertz had 36 receptions for 469 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie while improving immensely in all facets.

Now he’s preparing for his second season and he feels so much more prepared as this round of OTAs concludes Thursday.

“It was such a mystery last year at this time in that I really didn't know what was going to be going on,” Ertz told the Philadelphia Daily News. “And now, I'm kind of like a vet in the system and I know what to expect every day. I'm in the same routine, which is just focusing on getting better every day.”

Ertz believes he can elevate his level of play this season.

“I think I can make a big jump,” Ertz told the Daily News. “I mean, I'm not a predictions guy. At the end of the day, all I really care about are the wins. But at the beginning of the year, I kind of started off slow. As the season went on, I think the numbers and the plays started to pick up, and hopefully it's more of the same.”

Ertz developed a rapport with quarterback Nick Foles, which should get even stronger in 2014.

“What he did last year, 27-2 [TDs-interceptions], is kind of remarkable,” Ertz said. “But I don't think he's satisfied. Those two interceptions I'm sure are still bugging him, even the one in the snow. We do have a lot of playmakers on this offense. The ball's going to be spread around. I think that's what Nick does best, is find whoever's open and get him the ball. It doesn't matter who you are or how many years you've been here. He's going to find the open man.”
