A linebacker with the skill to get to the quarterback, Barwin finished the season with five sacks and one interception. Along with Trent Cole (eight sacks), the duo came up with some huge sacks.
But it wasn’t enough and the Eagles showed that with the selection of Louisville linebacker Marcus Smith with the No. 26 overall pick in the NFL draft.
More help was needed.
“I obviously have been around Marcus the most,” Barwin said on Tuesday’s edition of ‘Philly Sports Talk’ on Comcast SportsNet. “It's been really good so far, he seems like a humble kid. ... Me and Trent (Cole) have given him some advice, he seems to be picking up the defense.”
Barwin was also asked about competition at his position.
“You know you're on a good team when the best players teach the young guys how to take their job, and I heard that my rookie year and it really kind of resonated with me,” Barwin said on ‘Philly Sports Talk.’ “And I will try to teach (Smith) tricks of the trade that I've learned in my six years. It'll make him a better player, but in my last five years it'll make me a better player. He's gonna inspire me or challenge me to be better.”
