Steelers' pre-draft visits include safety, WR
By Scott Brown
PITTSBURGH -- A safety who is hoping to join his older brother in the NFL and a wide receiver who also excelled as a basketball player at South Carolina are among the players making pre-draft visits with the Pittsburgh Steelers today.
The Steelers are hosting Minnesota product Brock Vereen, whose brother Shane is a running back for the Patriots. Also visiting is Bruce Ellington, who started two seasons for the Gamecocks’ basketball team before deciding to focus on draft preparation.
Vereen, a first-team All-Big Ten selection by the conference coaches last season, had 56 tackles in 2013, intercepted a pass and broke up six others. The 6-foot, 199-pounder ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL scouting combine. He also recorded 25 repetitions of 225 pounds on the bench press.
Ellington does not have great size, but the 5-9, 197-pounder has excellent speed and quickness. Ellington caught 49 passes for 775 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He ran a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash at the combine and excelled in the shuttle runs.
