Originally from the Chicago metropolitan area, Indians 2B Jason Kipnis, also known as "Kip," attended the University of Kentucky and then Arizona State. While at ASU, he played second base and all the outfield positions. In the 2008 season, he was named the Pac-10 Conference Newcomer of the Year. The near year, he was the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year, a Pac-10 Conference All-Star outfielder and a first-team All-American outfielder.
The Indians drafted Kipnis in the second round of the 2009 draft. He quickly worked his way up the system, representing Cleveland in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game. He made his big league debut just a few weeks later, on July 22. He made a splash right off the bat, logging four consecutive home run games that August.
Because he tends to get his uniform dirty, Kipnis' teammates affectionately call him "Dirtbag." Manager Manny Acta once described him as "a blue-collar, dirtbag, run-through-a-wall, relentless type of guy."
